Domestic Violence and What It Takes to Break Free

â€Å"It began before we were together. He raped me and I got pregnant. I was pregnant when the [real] abuse started, [n]ot only physical, but mental, and sexual as well. The first time it happened he seemed to feel really bad about it so I really thought he would never do it again! Then a few months later he did it again and from there it was all the time!†, reports Lilly, a prior victim of domestic violence. Nevertheless, Lilly is not the only to have suffered from domestic violence. As a matter of fact, according to The National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey, â€Å"more than 1 in 3 women (35.6%) and more than 1 in four men (28.5%) in the United States have experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime.†(2010, pg. 2) Many people find domestic violence difficult to understand because its usually portrayed as just being physical abuse, in spite of common misunderstanding, domestic violence can be any form of abuse committed by a person targeting someone else. However, what is rarely known is: to what extent will these women go to in order to be free? Is it wrong to want to be free from a reality that they can no longer handle? In some cases the definition of freedom does not mean to run away or to file a restraining order against the partner committing the abuse; as a matter of fact, sometimes the only way to find freedom is through murder.
